1. Leash is in Walking Position as dog STARTS and ENDs now with a Sit.
- Holding the leash in Walking Position, command "Fido, Heel" as the left foot steps forward.
- Footwork sequence, that is the 3-Step Halt to AS, is more easily learned by working 'Fido' - your invisible dog. This helps in learning this critical mechanic. Here is the 3-Step Halt to AS sequence
- Slow or shorten your stride length as you dip your left shoulder towards dog. This cues the learning dog a change is coming.
- The 'SLIDE' = with your right foot forward while heeling, the left hand slides down leash and becomes a fist just above the snap bolt (keep hand on leash) palm to the ground.
- The 'REPLACE' = take another shorter 1/2 stride length forward with the LEFT foot as your right hand replaces the left hand, right pinkie closest to snap bolt...
- With right pinkie towards snap bolt, (thumb up to sky) give slight upward pressure as the left-hand shapes dog into a Sit by applying downward hand pressure to base of dog's tail. ALWAYS keep left hand position with left thumb towards your body as you do this downward pressure.
- Close the right foot (as the left foot is slightly forward) next to the planted left foot.
9. Praise for EVERY Sit, EVERY time
